Charles Bowen was born in 1859 in Birmingham, England; he apprenticed with the Hill firm of England. He immigrated to the United States in 1887; and began work with Cole & Woodberry of Boston, Massachusetts, where he remained until 1898. He was with Steere & Son of Springfield, Massachusetts, he was there until at least 1915; but was in Berkeley, California, by 1920.
