NOTES
The organ is installed across the front of the Auditorium. The Positiv is located
at the extreme left on the left wall and partially in front of the swellbox. The
expressive Swell is in the front, left corner. The Great is beside the Swell - to
the right and slightly lower. And the Pedal is to the right of the Great, and
slightly lower still. The 16' Quintadena and 16' Subbass are along the back wall.
The console is movable and was stored in a niche under the Great chest. It had the
combination action setterboard in the back.
This is a wonderful, extant example is Walter Holtkamp Sr.'s tonal ideal instilled
into a modest III-manual organ. Everything works well together, and the voicing is
clean. The Great 8' Spitz Flute almost takes-on the sound of a French Horn out in
the room...a very lovely effect. One unusual feature is the presence of the Swell
16' sub coupler. This was requested by the College Head of the Music department so
that the 8' Cromorne and 4' Oboe Schalmei could be sub-coupled to provide a pseudo-
rench 16-8-8-4 reed ensemble. It works surprisingly well.
In 2007, the College embarked on an ambitious program to build a new community Fine
Arts Center. The City of Maryville, Blount County, and other agencies contributed
to this project. The City of Alcoa - originally supporting the project - withdrew
its financial support. The Wilson Chapel/Theatre complex housing a 3/48, 1957
Holtkamp and the Little Chapel 1967, 2/4 Schantz; and the Fine Arts Center were all
demolished in August. The organs were removed by College alumnus James R. Stettner
between July 15 and August 15, and are stored in on-campus facilities.
While the organ was in storage, several ranks disappeared and had to be replaced.
These were: Swell Cornet III, Gemshorn 4, the entire Positive (8,4,2, 1-1/3 III),
and the Pedal 16' Subbass. New pipework was acquired from Holtkamp.
This organ was reinstalled in 2010 in the new recital hall by Bradley Rule & Co.
of nearby New Market, TN. No tonal changes were made to the organ. A new Swell
enclosure had to be made. The only mechanical change was a new solid state relay
and combination action by Musicom.
