Paul Carey established his firm as Paul Carey, Organ Builder in Troy, New York in 1965. Its first location was a garage located on a side street. The firm moved to its present location, a two-story, brick structure in the South End in 1977, and was incorporated in January of that year, as Carey Organ Co. As of November 2016, the company had five full- time employees.

The firm is a full-service organbuilder, that builds all new instruments, as well as doing rebuild and restoration work, tonal revisions, and additions. All voicing is done in-house, both of reeds and flues.

The firm also performs routine maintenance, and tuning, and provides service for emergency situations. It services over 100 instruments in the Northeastern United States.
