Begun as an adjunct to an organ builder in 1974 as Kimber-Allen, Inc, the firm was established as a separate business in 1979 in Johnson City, Tennessee. The name was changed to R.A. Colby in 1984.

The firm began building complete organs as well as continuing to be a supplier of parts. They are frequently contracted to build new consoles. In addition to organs and parts, the firm builds custom church furniture and provides ecclesiastical artwork in carved wood.
