Massachusetts, 1820-1892.
George Stevens was the brother of William Stevens. He was originially a carpenter who was working in Boston, Massachusetts, around 1820. He joined the William M. Goodrich firm of Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, and acquired that firm, thirteen years later in 1833. He initially formed a partnership with M. R. Gayetty (Stevens & Gayetty of East Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1833-1839). After the partnership ended, he continued as Geo. Stevens & Co. In addition to organbuilding, Stevens held local government offices; he was mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1851-1853; and with Cambridge Savings Bank, for 30 years, president. He retired from the organ business in 1892; and was succeeded by former employees George Gilbert and James Butler as Gilbert & Butler.
