The Ann Arbor Peninsular Courier and Family Visitant for 1 August 1867 reported that "The organ for the M.E. Church arrived last week, and is now being put up. It was built by Mr. W. A. Johnson, of Westfield, Mass., and it is believed will prove a very superior instrument. It cost here $3,500. Its capacity is as follows: [stoplist published--see stoplists section]
Messrs. C. A. Pierce and A. B. Nye, from the manufactory of Mr. Johnson, are putting the instrument in position."
The instrument was opened with an organ concert on Monday, 5 August 1867, by "Prof. [Wm. H.] Johnson, son of the maker; Prof. Meakin, organist of St. John's Church, Detroit; and Prof. [Henry Simmons] Frieze [of Ann Arbor]."
